What is Windows Server?
Windows Server is Microsoft's enterprise server operating system. In development since 1993, the platform is the industry standard for Active Directory, IIS web server, Hyper-V virtualization, Storage Spaces, RDP/RemoteApp and .NET runtime.
Windows Server is a native environment for Active Directory, IIS, Windows Authentication and .NET Framework applications that target Windows. Modern .NET and some SQL Server workloads can also run on Linux, so platform choice follows application dependencies.
What does it do?
.NET application hosting: ASP.NET Web Forms and Windows-dependent applications run on IIS, while modern .NET applications can run on Windows or Linux according to requirements. IIS application pools, Windows Authentication and Integrated Security are native to Windows.
SQL Server database: SQL Server edition and operating system are selected against the current support matrix for required features such as Always On, Reporting Services, In-Memory OLTP and columnstore.
Hyper-V virtualization: Hyper-V can run Windows and Linux virtual machines. Windows Server Standard and Datacenter virtualisation rights depend on correctly licensing the physical cores, licence stacking and access/CAL requirements. Capacity and platform suitability follow workload and licensing assessment.
Active Directory + Group Policy: Enterprise user management, single sign-on, OU/Group Policy central management. Hybrid-ready integration with Microsoft 365 (Office 365).
Remote Desktop Services (RDS): With appropriate CALs and security design, multi-user sessions, RemoteApp publishing and session-host architectures can be deployed.
File Server + Storage Spaces: SMB 3.0, DFS Namespaces, software-defined SAN with Storage Spaces Direct. Enterprise file sharing and backup infrastructure.
